Job Description:
Nutritionist III: Under the supervision of the Manager II, Family and Community Health, the Regional Nutritionist functions as the Director of Nutrition Services for the health service region. Designs and implements region-wide nutrition programs which promote the nutritional well being of the clients and communities served. Duties emphasize program planning, management, and evaluation; provision of training and technical assistance for DSHS employees, local health department staff and other health and human service agencies; providing team leadership for prevention programs; serving as preceptor for the Community Nutrition rotation of the DSHS Dietetics Internship. Develops annual Regional Public Health Nutrition Work Plan developed in conjunction with regional strategic goals, the Nutrition & Physical Activity Workgroup Action Items and the Texas State Strategic Health Plan. Exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment in performing the duties of the position.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. (50%) Provides comprehensive nutrition services with an emphasis on overweight/obesity and how they relate to chronic disease in support of Health Service Region 8, Local Health Departments, human service agencies, education agencies, communities and the public to include: 1) providing expert nutrition consultation to communities, @) planning and performing assessments of defined populations as they relate overweight/obesity and related chronic diseases, #) providing comprehensive nutrition expertise and education to internal programs/partners, local health departments and collaborating agencies, 4) developing, implementing and evaluating nutritional interventions for communities, schools and worksites, 5) coordinating efforts with other providers of health and nutrition, 6) addressing nutrition related health problems as articulated by community members or leaders, 7) identifying and/or assisting in the development of accurate, up-to-date nutrition education materials, 8) initiating and participating in data collection, 9) evaluating the impact of the health status of populations who receive public nutrition services, and 10) providing training on Nutritional Assessment for Texas Health Steps providers. Work will require the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the DSHS NPAOP Program Monitoring and Tracking System known as PMATS. (25%) Providers comprehensive consultation/training/technical assistance to internal DSHS programs within the region and other public health programs, educational facilities and other agencies and institutions regarding nutrition and other obesity-related topics and dietetics workshop and related educational needs. This may include daily or overnight travel and includes: 1) training and orientation workshops, 2) accredited continuing education presentations, 3) telephone consultation, 4) evaluation of nutrition and overweight/obesity related protocols and materials, and 5) interpretation of policies, rules, regulations and grant requirements. (10%) Interprets and disseminates to the public, scientific information and about nutrition as it relates to obesity and other chronic diseases, nationally recognized guidelines of nutrition related health issues and surveillance data. Creates, provides or arranges for the provision of health education, promotion and community outreach activities for the public. May collaborate with other regional staff, public health programs, agencies, institutions, and community coalitions in this function. This may require daily or overnight travel and include: technical training & informational presentations, 2) organization-level consultation and visits (e.g. worksite wellness projects), 3)school health advising and technical assistance, 5) media relations (radio, television, newspaper and other means of mass communication) and 6) occasional responses to individual inquiries from community members via phone or in writing. (10%) Functions actively as a member of multi-disciplinary regional or statewide DSHS work team. This may require daily or overnight travel and may include: 1) partnering with members of the regional health promotion/population-based teams(s), central office directed program projects, or other regional programs to provide technical assistance and aid to community stakeholders in assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring of environmental and policy changes to prevent & reduce obesity and reduce chronic disease risks, 2)participates as a member of one or more DSHS workgroup(s) to plan and implement nutrition and physical activity strategies, programs and services either statewide or for select populations in Texas and 3) functions as a member of review teams on statewide and regional RFPs, projects, tools, etc. as needed. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS (5%) Willing to participate in committee, boards, work groups, and interview panes as needed. Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and Regional Director. Responds to regional and state emergencies as needed.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of food and nutrition. Knowledge of available resources in the field of nutrition education. Knowledge of public health essential services as they relate to nutrition, obesity/chronic disease prevention. Knowledge of community-based nutrition models. Skill in educating individuals and groups on nutrition topics. Skill in utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, PageMaker and Outlook. Skill in leadership, facilitation, consensus building, and negotiation. Skill in providing training. Ability to read and understand technical materials. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to interpret Federal, State, and local regulations. Ability to plan and evaluate the need for nutrition and dietary services and programs. Ability to work independently, as well as cooperatively in a team setting. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics or some related health field. Registered Dietitian Licensed Dietitian

Initial Selection Criteria:
Registered Dietitian (please provide registration number); Bachelor's Degree Nutrition/Dietetics or some related field. Community nutritional experience. Licensed Dietitian.
